“How to make a dance piece”

Creators and Dancers:

  • Magdalena Negowska (Poland – Germany, Berlin)
  • Pep Nebot (Spain – Catalonia, Barcelona)
Introduction to the current state of the piece and the object of research

This project emerges from a central question: how can we create a dance piece that explains, at the same time, how it was created?
The research is based on the idea of making the creative process visible — revealing the motivations behind the creative impulse, from the initial exploration, the decisions made, and the moments of inspiration or blockage, all the way to the final structuring of movements and sections of the performance material.

This dance project originates from a fundamental curiosity in artistic creation: how is a dance piece constructed? And, even further, how can we share this creative journey with the audience in a way that is understandable, engaging, and faithful to the process we experienced?
From these questions, the proposal takes shape as a duet exploration in which two dancers not only present a finished dance piece, but also reveal the path that led them there.

Motivation and Philosophy Behind the Work

It is often said that in contemporary dance there exists a large distance between performers and the general audience. One of the aims of this research is to reduce that distance, showing how, in reality, anyone is a creator and a dancer in potential.
The research therefore involves both the creation of the piece itself and the question of how to communicate this process to the audience, always through dance, without stepping outside the piece or its poetic language.

Various techniques are used, such as combining dance and spoken narration, integrating written or visual poetry, incorporating audiovisual projections, or using direct gaze and improvisational moments addressed to the audience.
In this way, the audience not only sees the final result, but can also understand and sense the how and why behind each scene or section, recognizing their origins and evolution
